Early Bird/ Late Bird

Early Bird
Students who arrive at school well before their scheduled start time will be placed in the Early Bird Program. The Early Bird Program serves those parents/guardians who must drop off their child before school begins. Early Bird is a voluntary extension of the school day available to all students until the start of school. Early Bird provides a place for students to complete homework and quietly socialize with friends in a structured, supervised environment. 5-7th grade students are supervised in the South Cafeteria, and 8-12th grade students are supervised in the North Cafeteria. At 7:20 AM, 5-6th grade students and 8-12th grade students with an AM elective will be released from the Early Bird Program for their first class, which begins at 7:30 AM. At 8:15 AM, 7th grade students and any 8-12th grade students without an AM elective will be released for their first class, which begins at 8:25 AM.

The supervisors of the Early Bird Program oversees the safety of the students in the program; however, no organized program of instruction is presented. Students are required to follow all school disciplinary rules during this time. The school reserves the right to exclude students from the Early Bird Program for disruptive behavior or other misconduct. Students must have a hall pass to leave the designated area prior their release time in order to prevent disrupting classes already in session. There is no fee for Early Bird.

Late Arrivals and Early Pick-up
Students should arrive no less than ten minutes before the start of school to allow time to visit their locker before class begins. Students who arrive late to school must have a parent/guardian sign the student in, to obtain a late pass. All late arrivals will be recorded in the Student Arrival Log kept at the BASIS Scottsdale front office. To minimize disruptions, students who arrive late to school may be prevented from going to their class until the next passing period following their arrival. This could result in an unexcused absence. Unexcused tardiness and absences may be considered a Discipline Violation.

If a student needs to be released during the school day, a parent/guardian's presence is required. If someone other than the parent/guardian is nominated to collect the student, that person must be named on the student's Emergency Contact list. To minimize disruptions, students will NOT be called out of class. Parents must make arrangements to pick up their children during passing periods.

Late Bird Program
The Late Bird Program is available to all students and is scheduled Monday through Friday, 2:45 PM to 5:30 PM during regular school days. Late Bird will begin the second day of school and will be available during early release days until 3:00 PM.

Late Bird is a voluntary, fee-based extension of the school day for all students. This program allows students to be in the school building while waiting for pick up, waiting to meet with teachers, waiting for the start of an extracurricular, working on homework assignments or studying for exams. Students in Late Bird will be provided a quiet academic environment to complete homework and quietly socialize with friends in a structured, supervised environment. If your child is enrolled in Late Bird, please send them to school with snacks and a drink, keeping in mind that there is no refrigerator or microwave available.

Students are required to follow all school disciplinary rules during the Late Bird Program. The school reserves the right to exclude students from the Late Bird Program for disruptive behavior or any other misconduct.

All students attending the Late Bird Program between 2:45 PM and 5:30 PM are required to sign in using the Sign-In/Sign-Out Log kept by the Late Bird Supervisor. Until 4:00 PM, students may sign themselves out of Late Bird and go to the pick-up zone outside if their ride has arrived. Students are not permitted to leave campus and then return to Late Bird.

All Lower School students waiting for pick-up 20 minutes after their dismissal time and all Upper School students waiting after 4:30 PM will be escorted to Late Bird. At this point, the student will be considered a "Drop In." The parent/guardian of "Drop In" students must park in the school parking lot and walk to the Late Bird entrance to sign their child out of Late Bird. A parent/guardian's signature constitutes their agreement to pay the Late Bird fee for that day. Any disputes must be noted at the time of sign out.

When being picked up from Late Bird, the student is released only to their parent/guardian or a responsible person designated on the student's Late Bird Registration Form (filled out at the beginning of the year). If the parent or guardian has not submitted a Late Bird Registration Form, the Late Bird Supervisor will only release students to people indicated on that student's Emergency Contact form located in the front office. These dismissal measures are extremely important for the safety of your children. Please note that the police may be notified if you have not picked up your child by 5:45 PM
